HISTORY OF THE CLUB

The Premier Magic Club in Cornwall

The inaugral meeting of the Cornish magical societywas convened at the St Johns hall, Lemon Street, Truro on Saturday February 7th 1959.  The minutes record the persence of eighteen persons at the meeting and from those the officers and committee were elected.  As Chairman Col. J.P.Williams was elected, Ernie Toogood, Vice Chair.  As Tresurer one George Stephens was proposed and duly elected, George is still a member.
During the 1950’s Cornwall like most areas had a number of working magicians plus others interested in magic.  Peter Penwarden new a number of local magicians and they met with the idea of forming a local society.  Of the eighteen that attended the first meeting on the 7th of February 1959 fourteen became founder members.

When the society was founded it was noted that Truro was the most central area for meetings to be held.  St Johns Church Hall was therefore chosen for our first meeting but only two more meetings were held there.  The third meeting was held in the Womans Institute and the society remained there for several meetings.  due to booking problems it was felt that a move was necessary and perhaps a move to the Redruth area would suit members.  During the latter part of 1959 and the following two years a number of different venues were tried.  In 1963 the society made contact with the British Legion Club in Redruth and with a few exceptions remained there until 1967.  Between 1968 and 1970 the society once again found itself on the move.  Changes within the organisation within the British Legion, there own move to other premises and booking clashes really forced us to reconsider our position with them.  in 1971 the society moved to the recently built Carnon Downs Village Hall near Truro and has been there ever since.

In recent years the society has hosted “At Homes” and “Away At Homes” which not only raises money for the society but also for the booker, these also continue to this day.
